Google Calendar Sync woes and a workaround
Ok for weeks now I have been looking for a solution to the Outlook 2010 RTM incompatibility with the current version of the Google Calendar sync tool. I run Office 2010 x64 bit version and found out the hard way that tinkering with the Outlook 2010 executable by changing the 14.0.0 to 12.0.0 does NOT work. So after much headache and ran into a workaround all by ACCIDENT.
So here is my setup:
- Android Phone specifically Motorola DROID
- Outlook 2010 RTM 64bit
- POP3 Account (this is where I get meeting requests that I need sync’d with my phone)
- A normal personal gmail account
Here is my workaround:
When I get a meeting invite that I want to ACCEPT, I forward it to my GMAIL account. NOTE: I have to go to my GMAIL Account to view the email. Once I view the email, it adds it automatically to my Gmail calendar which then shows up on my DROID at the next synch.
Not the best solution but better than nothing. The way I look at it is that I have to take action on the meeting request anyway (ACCEPT or DECLINE) so while I am doing that if I can forward it to my GMAIL account it’s not a big deal.
Also one thing to note from an Outlook perspective is that you should forward the meeting request prior to ACCEPTING because if you do it after you accept the requestor will get a notification that you have forwarded the meeting request to your GMAIL account and confuse the requestor.
I hope eventually Google fixes their awesome sync tool to be compatible with Outlook 2010 RTM.
Thanks.
I cannot believe this will work!
Try it. Share your experience.
Hey, ok, I get it, I guess – but does this really work?
Works for me fine. You have to do it in a sequence as the post explains. Still working.
I would like to exchange links with your site sptechland.wordpress.com
Is this possible?
Will pingbacks work for you?
Hi there
Do you know how to synchronise the Calendar in Sharepoint 2007 and Google Calendar?
Thank you
Ma’ayan
I believe you cannot do this with available out-of-the-box features of SharePoint.
The only way I can think of doing this is through code. In SharePoint 2007 you would attach event receivers for Add, Update, Delete type of events and access the Google Calendar through a web service or the google api and manipulate data accordingly.
